The New icon will display next to published activities that are within 30 days of the start/release date, which is configured in the Activity Info tab of the Production Wizard. 
The Expiring Soon icon will display for published activities that are within 30 days of the activity's expiration date, which is configured in the Activity Info tab of the Production Wizard.
